Panties and Their Humble Beginning

Most of us are very familiar with panties, underwear, knickers, briefs or whatever you choose to call them.  They are a daily necessity.

Wickipedia defines panties as:

“Panties (in the USA and Canada) or knickers or pants (in the UK and Commonwealth) or undies (in Australia and New Zealand) are a form of underwear, usually light and snug-fitting, designed to be worn by women or girls in the area directly below the waist.”

Panties have evolved over the years and with the variety of styles, colors, and fabrics available today, some may possibly have a dilemma choosing a favorite style.

Did you know that the humble beginnings of the panty started during the time of the emancipation of women?

Origin of Panties and the Woman That Got Them Noticed.

Amelia Bloomer, a temperace reformer was born in 1818 and by the time she was 21 had already developed her own feminist ideas. Her husband encouraged her to write articles about women’s rights, in which he then published in his paper, The Seneca Falls Courier.  In the year 1849 she started her own publication known as the Lily and shortly there after started to promoted a women’s undergarment, which soon became known as bloomers.  However, these bloomers look nothing like the panties we have today, infact, they were a long style of crotchless baggy pants that ended at the ankles. During her travels giving lectures, it was noted that Amelia was seen wearing these baggy pants that went to her ankles,  with a short skirt over the top; many said it was unbecoming of a women to wear such attire.

Bloomer printed articles in the Lily to promote this undergarment designed by Elizabether Smith Miller, which was first called the bifurcated skirt, but quickly became known as “bloomers”.  Even though Amelia Bloomer was never completely successful with the womens dress reform, her writings in the Lily inspired many people and she is known today for printing the first women’s suffrage journal in the U.S., along with promoting the beginnings of the panty.

Not too much later these bloomers where cut significantly shorter. The Parisian cancan dancers intentionally cut these longer knickers to show off more leg and thigh. Then came the roaring 20′s  and these shorter undergarments became popular because they could be worn with the knee length skirts and shorter style of pant. As time went on the panties changed even more and became smaller, with more variety in fabrics.

During the 60′s and the new generation of hippie followers, the cotton briefs became popular, it was a way to break away from the traditional girdle underwear. In the 70′s the thong panty started it’s first appearance.  Soon to follow the 60′s and 70′s of free love, came the 80′s which brought many changes to the design of the panty.

The 80′s started a time of self image and working out at the gym to look your best. The panty was redesigned with a higher cut leg opening ,  along with a waistline above the belly button and smaller back to show of cheeks.

In the past two decades since the 80′s, the panties have become even more colorful and more small,  could this also be evidence of global warming?

What is your favorite era of the panties?
