French Corset Circa: 1885-1895
The French corset shown above circa 1885-1895 was considered incredibly flattering and attractive in it’s time. Is such a style still considered sexy?
Today, there are many styles of lingerie to choose from, but what style is a favorite to many and how is this style flattering for any body shape?
If you remember in the posted article “History of Lingerie” this style of lingerie started during the Renaissance times.
Here is a small exert from that post:
“Turning the corner to Renaissance times, started a change in the focus of the woman’s body. Women prided themselves in showing off their hourglass figures, to do so, they were required to wear undergarment such as corsets to accentuate those curves in their body. Despite the size of the women, these corsets where designed to shrink the waistline to reveal their curves.”
Today corsets and bustiers still create a beautiful hour glass shape and show the amazing curves of a women. What makes them different is the incredible variety in styles and fabrics that are offered. The versatility of this style of lingerie can give you the option to wear outside the bedroom as well.
What exactly is a corset?
A corset is designed to shape the torso or mid section to the desired size, so naturally the main reason for a corset is to slim the shape of the body. Corsets are flattering on about any shape, they are designed to slim the waist while at the same time excentuate the bust and hips. Initially the corsets were designed t0 be worn underneath the clothing, but with the wide variety of styles and fabrics that are offered today, you can create your own look with the addition of a corset for more than just the slimming appeal.
Corsets are usually constructed with flexible fabric that is stiffened with boning inserts inside. Corsets are held together around the body by a lace up design, usually in the back.

A corset waist cincher is just the same as a corset, with the slight variation of the shorter style that covers from just above the hips to below the ribs.
A waist cincher also assists in the illusion of a “smaller” waistline.
What is a bustier?
A bustier is very similar to a corset with a few minor differences. First of all, a bustier has bra cups which will create more coverage and is usually worn as lingerie. The bonus of a bustier is that is also provides support as well as a fitted torso to keep everything in place.
A bustier is generally strapless, and with the support of the torso section it will prevent anything from moving out of place. Some styles of bustier can be worn under strapless outfits for added support, plus gives that extra sexy layering piece! It will either lace up on the front or back and additional buttons or hooks may be added to style for needed convenience to get on and off.
